A foley artist does the sound effects in films that are not recorded live with the actors, such as the sound of feet walking, glass shattering, and doors creaking. They are recorded in studios while watching the film and coordinating the sound with the action. Sometimes they use old sounds (There is a foley sound library) if they can't get the right effect. The foley artists use various items to produce the sounds and they must be creative in thinking of how to produce the correct sound. Does that help?

Wicked. I'd love to have that job.

Yeah. I think it would be fun. Someone from my film class said that they went on a tour for a studio and they got to produce some sounds for a movie. We also did an in-class simulation of what a foley artist would do.

That's cool. What's a film class? What sort of things do you do?

Film appreciation. We watch and analyze movies for their literature, genre, technology, history, impact, art, and values. Right now, we are on our drama unit. We had units on animation, horror, the silent era, musicals, etc.

Bit like English.

Like English class? Not quite. We learn about the ways special effects are made, the way movies are created, etc.
We just started watching the Godfather in class today. It was kind of hard to hear though.

It would be fun to watch movies in class. I'd love to do that all the time, actually, instead of school work.

Does your school have it's own movie theatre?!

Well, it has a theater for plays and a huge movie screen they pull down when we watch a movie.

Do you get popcorn and jaffas that you can fling around the theatre?

No. And what are jaffas?

You don't know what jaffas are?! [breathes]
Jaffas is the registered trademark for a small round sweet consisting of a soft chocolate center with a hard covering of orange flavoured and coloured candy. The name derives from the color of oranges from Jaffa, Israel. Jaffas have often been sold in movie theatres and have gained iconic status because of the noise made when they are dropped (accidentally or deliberately) and rolled down sloping wooden floors.
They are fun to throw at people and rown down the aisles in movie theatres.
