Is it the dark? Is it the unknown? Is it the blood and gore? Or is it knowing there is something around the corner when the main character does not? Discuss various aspects that make a film scary.

I think that a film is scary because it plays off of typical human fears, i.e., the dark, not knowing what to expect, enclosed spaces, being 'hunted' (being stalked, someone killing people) by someone or something. Humans still have that primordial fear.

Now the question remains, what is more scary.... implied violence or very real-like violence? (Implied violence was used more in the past. Now people expect movies to have special effects that show blood and gore).

I think that, if done well, both implied violence and realistic violence can achieve the end the director wants them to. If the proper atmosphere and mood is set then an event that takes place off camera can be just as effective as one that the audience sees. But, if the atmosphere and mood don't work implied violence will just leave the audience wondering what happened. Conversely, if staged right, realistic violence can be terrifiying. But, if it is taken too far over the top it might end up being either Pythonesque-ly humorus our really disgusting, but not very scary.

Remember when we were doing the game where you had to say: The Next Person Has A ? and you said that "The Next Person Has A Sister," and I said that you were reading my mind. You really are psychic Claire; you just don't know it yet.
