They didn't "create" the era. When film was first started, they didn't have the technology to hook the sound with the picture. (Nor the equipment in theaters) It was still getting started. In fact, in the early days of sound, some theaters didn't have the speakers for the movies and lost business because all the people wanted to see "talkies."

Yes. The early movies had little plot, but the physical comedy made it entertaining.

It means slapstick type humor, as well as jokes that are nonverbal.
